IK Partners to sell MDT technologies to BU Bregal Unternehmerkapital
IK Partners (“IK”) is pleased to announce that the IK VIII Fund (“IK VIII”) has signed an agreement to sell MDT technologies (“MDT” or “the Company”), a leading European building automation platform, to funds advised by BU Bregal Unternehmerkapital (“BU”). Financial terms of the transaction are not disclosed and completion remains subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Engelskirchen, Germany, MDT is a specialist manufacturer of smart building components based on the KNX standard. The Company’s offering comprises wired and wireless KNX components, high-end design sensors and cloud-enabled management solutions, enabling the automation and control of a multitude of functions such as heating, ventilation and lighting in both residential and commercial buildings.
Today, MDT employs approximately 250 people, with a growing presence in Europe, India and the Middle East. Through strong channel partnerships that benefit from high installer loyalty and a highly effective go-to-market strategy, the Company serves a broad global customer base.
Since partnering with IK in March 2020, MDT has built on its strong engineering heritage to become a leading European provider of KNX-based building automation solutions. The Company has more than doubled its output while expanding its product portfolio to around 600 actuators, sensors and system devices that help improve building comfort and energy efficiency. MDT has also extended its international commercial footprint by establishing dedicated sales, marketing and technical support capabilities, while evolving from a founder-led organisation into a mature business with a full C-suite and deepened functional leadership across R&D, Operations and Finance.
At the same time, the Company has invested in a new state-of-the-art headquarters and highly automated manufacturing facility in Engelskirchen, creating a modern, scalable production platform with significantly increased manufacturing capacity to support future growth. More than 95% of MDT's products are manufactured in-house, reinforcing the Company's reputation for quality, reliability and product availability while providing the operational capacity and organisational depth to support continued international growth.
The Company has further built out its technology capabilities and product offering through the strategic acquisitions of Tense, Tapko and Apricum, adding premium design expertise, enhancing KNX software capabilities and widening the Company's geographical reach.
The Company has also enhanced its sustainability credentials by setting verified science-based emissions reduction targets, sourcing 95% of its electricity from renewable sources and completing a full EU Taxonomy assessment.
Together, these initiatives have created a uniquely comprehensive KNX platform that is well positioned for its next stage of growth alongside BU, driven by international expansion beyond the DACH region, the continued development of its product and software portfolio as well as potential complementary acquisitions.
Roger Karner, CEO of MDT technologies, said: “We would like to thank the IK team for their support and partnership over the past six years. Together, we’ve transformed MDT from a German specialist into a business with genuine European scale, without ever losing the engineering culture and customer centricity that built it. I am proud of what the team has achieved and confident BU is the right partner for the next chapter of MDT’s growth journey. We’re excited about BU’s trust in our vision and are ready to start this new phase together.”
Mirko Jablonsky, Partner at IK Partners and Advisor to the IK VIII Fund, added: “Since our investment in MDT in 2020, we’ve worked closely with Roger and the team to build the basis for further growth. Having further strengthened MDT's leadership position in Germany by investing in innovation, international expansion, operational excellence, sustainability and organisational capabilities, the Company is exceptionally well positioned for its next phase of growth. It has been a pleasure to be part of that journey and we wish the whole MDT team continued success in the next stage of its journey with BU.”
Felix Werdin, Partner at BU, commented: “We have been impressed by MDT’s leading position in the German KNX market and are convinced of its numerous growth opportunities. Roger and his team have built a resilient, innovation-led and customer-focused business with a highly differentiated product portfolio. We look forward to partnering with them to accelerate the Company’s international development and support its continued investment in products, technology and capabilities.”
